Here’s an updated variant of the bird simulation. Added features include randomization in the instanced bird sizes, varying speeds in the flapping animation cycle per bird instance (And, the faster the birds flap their wings, the greater their velocities.), irregular particle emissions to create gaps and uneven formations found within the flock, and refined collision detections between each bird. More specifically, collisions between birds have been set up to where when one instance nears another, they gently sway away from one another, ultimately affecting their velocities, trajectories, and animation cycle speeds. This simulates a more naturalistic and organic reaction between the particle instanced-driven birds. In addition, a simple, invisible piece of geometry has been added to act as another collision element, encompassing the entire simulation to help maintain its form, and to prevent erratic particles from wandering away from the rest of the group. This particular polygonal shape creates the same organic swaying results as the between-birds collision attribute.
