Its a brand new year. After more than 2 month of silence. It's time to unveil what Joey and I have been working on over the winter break. So with out further adieu, let the posting of pretty images commence!
First here is a matte painting of the sky in the scene:

Now onto something that I've learned in the process of supervising the composition of the layout: Forced perspective
While 3d is an amazing tool that allows of fast creations of complex forms and physically accurate perspective, readability in the film medium will still be more important than physical accuracy.
Below is a rough rendered shot of the layout. Notice that each of the individual hanging building are of the same scale.

Now to fake some perspective(quick photoshop edit):
- decreasing the size of the building near the temple and making them closer together
- making the top of the temple smaller

The faked perspective pushes the temple way into the distance in a way that physical accuracy can’t. These tricks that have been used since the construction of the Cinderella castle in Disney world.
Finally here are rendered shots of the textures for the temple:
The temple comprises of 4 color, 4 bump, and 4 specularity maps each at 4k.

I am currently starting to texture the 25k environment. Should be challenging and a lot of fun :)
Till next time
~Phil
